The land lay
all about me
like a blanket
marked with places
and spaces I have
inhabited over the
vast stretch of my
days here on
this earth-place.
This patch here
gave me a new
way to know
all about suffering,
that one there a
new way to cook
the trout I pulled
out of the stream,
the one here shows
how to give yourself
to a family, and this
one how to hold hands
with the dying.
Each has a story and
an adenture to show
and at once the land
becomes a tapestry
which rises up and
which I may wrap myself
up and cuddle with all
I have known through
all of my days. Soothing
my being on itself.
Lessons and journeys,
people and places,
events and meanings
woven into the whole
of the fabric used. The
color and hue of each
warp and weft of each
strand and thread are
woven into what is
here revealed.
The blanket is not
for warmth alone,
it is to open our eyes
as well. Functional
and aspirational have
always been at hand
with the textiles of life.
