Milkweed Flight

We are beyond
the days of swithering
autumn color upon
these mountains;
of shifting fall light
here among these hills.

We are in the days
of milkweed flight
and ragweed fancy;
of crisping sun-grown
light snapping forth from
gloaming leaves
and blue-rich skies.

We are being ravished
by the uncontainable glory 
of the falling asleep
of time. 

Stand alert
and find your way
into the strain of nature-song;
cloth yourself with
a swath of vibrancy and
seasonal display.

These are the days
of fanfare before our
warmth turns brown
and falls to the ground
covering the trails
of our summer
upon the surface of
our lives.

Rest is coming;
but for today arise
and keep awake -
these are the days
of milkweed flight.
